ECMO is a technique that provides prolonged respiratory and cardiac support for patients whose lungs or hearts are unable to function in a life-sustaining manner. Common instances for the use of ECMO include severe pulmonary or cardiac failure, hypoxemic or hypercapnic respiratory failure, hypothermia, and as a bridge within lung or heart transplantation procedures.

Situation

A typical ECMO system features only one sensor for measuring the blood flow, but if venoveno-arterial (VVA) access is required during the ECMO procedure, it is not possible to carry out additional blood flow measurements using only a standard ECMO device.
